Who is responsible to administer course registration and to keep a report of the certification under the Coach Safely Act?
The athletic administrators of Youth Athletics Associations, which include all organized by municipal and
county parks and recreation organizations; and, all club and travel youth sports organizations whose
volunteer or paid coaches (not a member of the State High School Athletics Association) accesses school
property for practice or competition.
What is the role of the CoachSafely Foundation?
The CoachSafely Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves as a national clearinghouse for advancing
state and local policy, guidelines and best practices. The Foundation helped develop the peer-review and
evidence-based content for the PlaySafelySports online course in injury recognition and prevention.
What is the role of PlaySafelySports?
The PlaySafelySports, LLC is the licensor of the online course; manages the learning system and
certification process; and, provides routine reporting of the course completion on each recipient to the
athletic association administrator. It provides each Youth Athletic Association administrator with a code
for access to registration and to receive reporting.
Why was the Coach Safely Act passed?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared youth sports for aged 14 and under
athletes to be “High Risk” due to the injury data indicating that 4 in 10 will require a medical visit
because of an injury. As an intervention the CDC says fifty per cent (50%) of these injuries are
preventable by training coaches and making parents aware of best practices.
Is my state the only state that mandates training coaches in compliance with the Coach Safely Act?
Since 2018 the Coach Safely Act has become model legislation in multiple states with even more states
reviewing the legislation for enactment. Coaches have been trained by PlaySafelySports in 36 states.
How long will the certification last? Should I recertify?
The certification is for one calendar year. Your administrator will be notified. You should re-certify.
